Sinopse
The deceptively light-hearted novel, published in 1908 follows in the tradition of social comedy started by Jane Austen. Deeper undercurrents pervade the story of Lucy Honeychurch´s experiences firstly among the English a abroad in Florence and then back in her native, rural Surrey. With the help of the unconventional Emerson family, Lucy´s gradual social un sexual awakening is achieved. Her emancipation both from the "muddle" of English middle-class structures and from the "undeveloped heart" of her smugly intellectual fiancée, Cecil Vyse, are two of Forster´s central themes in the novel. The text is accompanied by an exhaustive introduction and a select bibliography. There are also numerous explanatory footnotes, with phonetic transcriptions of the most difficult words. Guided comprehension and analytical activities provide a more profound and critical reading of the work.
