This is a photographs book in which can be illustrated some aspects of Janeses culture. The wood-block prints in this book represent one of the highpoints of Japanese, indeed global, artistic achievement. They were mass-produced for popular consumption the Edo period (1615-1868), one of the most culturally vibrant in Japanese history. Developments in the arts coincided with and benefited from rapid urbanisation and the emergence of a welthy merchant class.
